“10 Things to do Immediately
When Someone Dies!”
From: Shelley Repka-Willard, Founder, Executors Checklist

Dear Friend,
On Friday, August 18, 2006 my friend, Beth Crews, received a late night visit from the local police. An officer had come to deliver this message:
“I’m so sorry to tell you that your son died tonight”.
Can you imagine her shock and disbelief?
Yes, it was true. Michael, her 21 year old son, was dead.
Earlier in the evening Mike and his best buddy were fooling around… play fighting. No alcohol or drugs were involved, nothing out of the ordinary. They were just being guys and wrestling around in the yard. The evening then turned tragic.
Taking a blow to the heart, Mike collapsed. His friends rushed him to the hospital, however, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The autopsy later revealed that he wasn’t killed by a blow to the heart. Rather, it seemed that, “God just reached in and switched off his battery”.
The next few days were a whirlwind of activity, questions and emotions. Beth, along with Rachel, Mike’s older sister, were beside themselves. There were so many questions:
- What happened?
- What went so horribly wrong?
- Who was involved?
- What do we do?
The days to come brought many family and friends offering support the best they could. No one had expected a union because a healthy young man, Michael, had died suddenly. Everyone’s world took a sudden turn… mainly to the unknown.
What do you do when someone dies? Especially when it is so sudden and unexpected? Then again, what do you do when someone is diagnosed with a terminal illness and you’re told to “get your affairs in order”?
Regardless of whether someone passes away suddenly or is given notice, it is still unsettling. Are we ever really prepared for death despite the circumstances? The answer is yes, we can be prepared.
There are many questions and concerns regarding someone’s passing. Not to mention the rollercoaster of emotions. And, solutions can seem unreachable. This is why I’ve developed the Executor’s Checklist Guide for Americans &/or Canadians.
In my heart of hearts, I was directed to create a simple, yet effective, “tool” to help people when faced with death and the sudden loss of a loved one.

Let me explain a few things:
1) Myself and Nadene Tipper created the Executor’s Checklist “tools” in 1999 when we became Executrix’s (Trustees) for various family and friends. Our research discovered that there weren’t any simple resources to help us at the time of death…. something that would outline what you do on day one, day two, etc… However, for the past 11years, we’ve focused on helping people be “proactive”. We thought it would be best to work with people and help them to prepare for the business of administering an estate. Our business struggled and then it came to me - this approach is not in line with human nature. The majority of people are procrastinator’s… especially when it comes to preparing for death. So, how can I and these tools best help people?
2) Michael’s Mom, Beth, is my “soul sister” and we have been friends for many years. At the time of Mike’s passing I was there by her side. I saw first hand what she, a grieving mother, went through. This too, pained my heart. If I could have, I would have found a way to take her pain away. However, in life, death is part of the life cycle. Don’t you agree that it’s so unfortunate when a child dies before the parent? Now, how could I best help Beth and others like her? How could I use these helpful tools to help others at the time of death - AND - during the next many months of administering the estate????
Then, one morning as I woke up, it came to me. Actually, I believe it was some sort of divine intervention. Lying there, it struck me that people are not proactive and will constantly be affected by the passing of a loved one.
So, with this in mind, I wanted to honour my friend Beth, and so many like her - at the time of their need - by re-focusing Executor’s Checklist on helping those when faced with the death of a loved one.
The “tools” are in place and they have helped Beth and many people like her… here is what she has to say about it.

Relieve your stress & anxiety…
Do you too have feelings of stress and frustration when you think about the passing of a loved one? Do you feel anxiety at the thought of getting all of their (and perhaps your) affairs in order? Do you know what steps to take? What to do on day one, day two…?
Do you know what decisions to make? Who to contact? Where ALL the important documents are located? Do you know where to find the Will… then again, is there a Will? Where are the birth certificates and the social security cards? Where are the home/auto/life insurance policies? How about the bank information – where are the passbooks and debit cards located?
Do you know that you have 30 days to transfer air miles? Who’s thinking about air miles when someone dies? Then again, things like air miles could be significant to the family sometime in the future. Now is the time to relieve your stress and anxiety by using the Executor’s Checklist Guide when someone dies!

10 Tips featured in the Executor’s Guide...
If you have been named or suspect that you are helping with the affairs of a loved one who has recently passed away, then the following are 10 things to do immediately:
![]() |
Consult with the authorities regarding organ donor use.Is this a consideration and depending on the circumstances, can the organs be donated? |
![]() |
Contact...Family members, close friends, the deceased’s employer, any religious advisors (as required). The deceased’s attorney, accountant and financial planner. |
![]() |
Make arrangements for the temporary care of all minor children and pets.Farmers/Ranchers are to make provisions for the care of their animals and farm/ranch operations. |
![]() |
Locate the Will.Contact the deceased’s lawyer or check in the safety deposit box. When all those efforts fail... the filing cabinets or dresser drawers might be the next place to look. |
![]() |
No Will. Don't dispair! An application to the Probate Court allows for the appointment of an Administrator to carry out the duties and responsibilities of estate administration. The laws of each state will govern the actions of the Administrator. In Canada, an application to the Court of Queen’s Bench – Surrogate Matter, allows for the appointment of an Administrator to carry out the duties and responsibilities of estate administration. Check the phone book for the local office near you. |
![]() |
Were there any pre-planned funeral arrangements? If so, contact the organization / business that the deceased made arrangements with for the funeral / celebration of life service plans. |
![]() |
Contact the funeral home to set up an appointment within the next 24 hours. You will be asked to make decisions in regards to the funeral service. Do not feel pressured or intimidated… if you feel you need a second meeting with the Funeral Director, do not hesitate to request a little more time. A day or two will not have adverse affects on the service that you plan. As long as the deceased is properly cared for, you have time to make the best decisions. Be prepared for the funeral home to request a financial deposit. |
![]() |
Gather information to be used in the obituary and eulogy.Find pictures and collect stories about the deceased and determine who will be speaking at the ceremony. |
![]() |
Obtain copies of the death certificate.Obtain copies of both the Coroner’s death certificate and the Funeral Director’s Statement of Death. A Death Certificate can also be obtained at a local registry office. |
![]() |
Documentation.Record all expenses that relate to the funeral / celebration of life and other costs that may occur. Keep all receipts! |
